Great Dane-Labrador Retriever Mix Dog for Adoption in Arlington, Virginia, 22204 USNickname: Duke Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Great Dane / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Duke! A young couple who saw him running along I-85 saved this handsome Lab mix. It was a harrowing experience, and it took them 3 hours to get him to safety. After posting on lost and found and notifying the local shelters, no one came forward to claim him. They graciously took Duke in, and he lived with their Australian Shepherd and 5-month-old baby until a foster home could be found. Duke has been in his foster home for two weeks, living with Lou and Scotty and their two GSDs, Knox and Dozer. Duke found a playmate in Knox who is close in age. They love to play chase in the yard and share toys well. Duke is an energetic but not a roughhouse player, and he’s very respectful of the senior Dozer and will defer to him. We think Duke is about 1.5 years old and is a long, lanky 66 pounds. He has a medium energy level, the classic, lovable Lab personality, and, of course, is a messy drinker. He loves running and playing in the backyard and quickly found all the toy boxes in the home. He loves cuddling on the couch after playtime and will snore softly beside you on the couch. We checked in with his foster mom, Lou, for an update: “Duke has settled right in. He’s housetrained and crate-trained. We crate him when we both leave the house, but he’s allowed free roam at night to sleep out with our dogs. He loves to romp in the yard and the rain and mud do not faze him. He will run and play in the pouring rain and muddy yard but then stand perfectly still to be dried off before coming into the house. He seems to enjoy being dried off with the towel. I also trimmed ALL of his nails while he was lying on the couch, and he did not move; he just laid there like a very good boy. Duke is a little unsure about new things, so I have started taking him out to get him more exposure. We went to the pet store last week, and he was a little scared at first with his tail tucked, but we walked around to get him more comfortable. Within about 10 minutes, he met a lot of the staff, and multiple people and kids came up wanting to pet him. He loved the attention and wanted the pets. He was so gentle with the kids who were around 8 to 10 years old. It was so sweet he sat down right in front of the kids and let them pet him, and he gave him kisses on their hands. They also shared treats, and he was very gentle and respectful. We have been working on his leash skills, and he walks well with a training collar and really needs one, or he will pull you around and is excited to go and do! Duke does have that fun-loving Lab personality of being a goofy, loving cuddle bug who loves to play., he just needs more exposure to different things and time to adjust.
