Slinky Star23 / Turnip23 Domestic Shorthair Young Male

Location:
Youngsville, NC
Description:

Slinky Star and Turnip are two best adorable friends who share ONE working eye! They are a completely bonded pair who want to do life together, and they have been inseparable their entire lives. Slinky Star came to the rescue as a tiny baby with a severe untreated eye infection in both eyes, which was not treatable and resulted in his blindness. Turnip, his seeing eye friend and brother from another mother who was rescued along with Slinky's siblings, was born with only sighted eye and a tiny underdeveloped eye. Turnip had an eye enucleation to remove his underdeveloped eye, and Slinky's left eye was also removed at the same time. Slinky's right eye was not removed, as there is some possibility he has light sensitivity in that eye, and the idea of him being completely in the dark (if he could see some light) was too sad to think about! Slinky's right eye is a little unusual looking, but we know his forever family won't mind that. No ongoing eye care is expected for either of them. They have been in their foster family for one year, patiently waiting for their forever family. While they are not difficult to care for (most people wouldn't even realize Slinky was blind without noticing his eyes), they do require a special home (see more details below). They are once in a lifetime kind of cats as far as how amazing they are. Everyone who meets them falls in love, but there just hasn't been that perfect home for them YET. More about Slinky Star: Despite his blindness, Slinky is a happy and healthy boy – the most snuggly boy you will ever meet with the softest fluffy white fur. Unlike many blind cats, Slinky loves to be held as long like a baby as he can hear you approaching and as long as you put him down in a safe space (not on a raised surface where he could get disoriented). He is ALWAYS purring, so loudly you can often hear him across the room! Slinky loves scratching posts and cat trees. It's amazing that, even without sight, he can climb cat trees and play rough and tumble with his friends. He likes to play with toys that he can hear, and he especially loves toys that make crinkle noises. But his favorite toy is a ping pong ball. He likes to have his ping pong balls with him, even in his cat carrier, and he throws them on the ground and chases after them. Slinky tilts his head and looks at you when you are talking to him like he's looking at you. His senses are heightened, and he has a remarkable sense of space where he can jump on your lap and snuggle into your neck as if he always knows exactly where you are. He also loves to stretch out on the top of his cat tree and look out the window where he can feel the sun on his face. He is a big brother to all the tiny fosters who have lived with him the last year, and he is affectionately known as Uncle Slinky. Uncle Slinky is a true *funcle* (fun uncle) and doesn't mind tiny kittens jumping around on him or snuggling in, and he guides them around, which is a strange sight for a completely blind cat. More about Turnip: Blind cats need a sighted cat to help them navigate the world and be a companion. For Slinky, that’s his brother and seeing EYE friend, Turnip. Slinky and Turnip don't care if they are brothers from another mother – although arguably Slinky didn't make the best choice for his seeing eye bestie when he picked a one-eyed cat! Turnip is the perfect combination of fun and snuggly. He bounces around and climbs and then lies down (not gracefully) with feet in the air. He loves ball tracks, string toys, and batting around ball toys. Slinky and Turnip are always together – whether it’s snuggling on the cat tree or chasing each other around! Slinky Star is exceptionally good at the game of chase for someone who can't see. Blind cats learn quickly and will map the house. They are very easy to care for and do not have litter box issues. Because Slinky has been blind almost his entire life, he doesn't realize he is not a typical, sighted cat. Blind cats do require a special family to address some specific needs. Some things to consider:1. No small children.2. No dogs or an especially cat-savvy dog. A blind cat will not be able to protect himself. 3. The ideal home will have minimal stairs (or gated stairs) and no open railings (Some of our prior adopters of blind cats have installed plexiglass/or another barrier on the lower part of stair rails to keep the cat from falling over the edge.)4. The ideal home will be free of major clutter with furniture that is not re-arranged often. (Blind cats rely on scent and memory to find their way around. They may also memorize heights and distances. Therefore, keeping furniture consistent is helpful.)5. Once you've established spots for food and the litter box, try not to move them.6. Blind cats appreciate lots of talking to know you are near and enjoy sounds and toys that have squeaking, chirping, or crinkling.Pre-approved potential adopters may meet Slinky Star and Turnip and other adoptable Purr Partners kitties at one of our weekend adoptathon events by applying today at https://www.purrpartners.org/adopt/cats/For more information or to apply to adopt please go to: https://www.purrpartners.org/adopt/If you have any questions or would like to adopt Slinky Star23 / Turnip23, please reach out to the adoption group directly.
