Adopt DORI a Black American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed Breed (Medium) / Mixed

Location:
Kyle, TX
Description:

Half dog, half piglet; Dori's contented little grunts when she is getting petted are so adorable. She loves wading in the kiddie pool when it's warm enough, and loves a game of tug-of-war or wrestling with her jolly ball. Sadly she has lost some trust in people and needs reassurance and treats to know that she is safe, but once she knows someone she will go above and beyond to demonstrate her love, and will stare so sweetly into your face with her expressive eyes and her little smile, and there is no such thing as too much bodily contact. Dori is nervous of other dogs in the shelter environment but has been able to co-exist with the three in her previous foster home and did brilliantly after a week or so of the "crate and rotate" system, which allowed the dogs to get used to each other without having to interact face-to-face unless on walks out of the house, but unless the potential adopter has the time and experience to manage this safely, it is best for Dori to be the only dog in the home. Dori has a huge appetite for playing, both with other dogs and just by herself, but is also very good during "quiet time" in her crate with a long-lasting chew, and she slept in her crate at night, snoring gently after another busy day. Dori is OBSESSED with water, and dives in like a pro and will swim and bite at the splashing water she churns up. It can be very hard to get her to come away from the pool/river/stock tank, and she would probably continue to dive and swim until she could no longer stand. In the house she liked to be close to her people, and there's a little spot by the cooker where she sat every evening whilst the humans are cooking- it's also very useful as she will tidy up any falling pieces of food. Dori generally did well with new people once away from the shelter- she would be in her crate as they came into the house, and then let out to greet them, and she saw that her foster siblings were very excited to have visitors, so she was too. Visiting dogs took longer to acclimate to, and the best way to do this was to meet away from the yard and go on a walk altogether, and Dori would soon settle down, at which stage she was ready to sniff the other dogs, and then she was able to ignore them completely.
