I was brought to MAS in February of 2023 when my owner's health declined and was unable to care for me any longer. Unfortunately, my health wasn't the greatest either...I had tested positive for heartworm. What is heartworm? I am so glad you asked! Heartworms happen when an infected mosquito bites a dog (that regrettably hasn't been deterred with preventative), and the heartworm larvae travel through the bloodstream and into the heart. The larvae then grow into 12-14 inch worms (EW!). Beings that we live in Michigan and there is a TON of water around for the mosquito population to breed and reproduce (more than I'm sure everyone appreciates), heartworm prevention should be a top priority for pets. Take it from me....this treatment stuff is terrible to go through and no fun (also it is SO much cheaper to prevent it from happening, rather than treating the aftermath). I am proud to say, that I have finished my treatment and the MAS vet does not anticipate my heartworm history causing me any further issues, so long as I am kept on preventative. I am beyond ready to settle into enjoying the rest of my life with my new family. I love to lay on my bed, but I also enjoy the outdoors time too; making me a perfect mix for a moderately active family. I would describe my personality as infectiously happy, I have a way of wiggling my nub tail into the hearts of most anyone that I meet. Now that I have completed my heartworm treatment, I have very much enjoyed the company of other dogs to play with as well! A home with cats would not be a good match for me though; I am not a fan of cats and I always try to chase them away. I also love spending time with volunteers of all ages at MAS, cuddling up with them and going for walks. And although I adore people, I do appreciate that my things are my things. Living in a home with people that understand my boundaries is a must. Ready to add a dash of this handsome-hound companionship to your life?
