Adopt Kagome a Orange or Red Domestic Shorthair / Domestic Shorthair / Mixed cat

Location:
Denver, CO
Description:

Kagome Hello wonderful humans of Colorado. I am the cute, 3-year-old ginger boy, named Kagome. Since you clicked on my picture, you know that I am adorable, but I am so much more. I have such a unique story, and most of my life was made up of events I would like to forget, but I will share some with you now, so you know my sad, but ultimately hopeful story. I lived my life on my own on the streets of Wichita, Kansas. My only interaction with people was scary and with them being not very nice to me, so I grew up thinking that people meant danger. I was trapped and brought to a shelter in Wichita. I was absolutely terrified of this environment, so all I did was hide and hiss to protect myself. I am small after all. Because I was so terrified, I was deemed "unadoptable" by that shelter, which I hear means something very bad for me. I was brought here to Max Fund in February. Now, I know how lucky I was, but at the time I was really freaking out. I was put in a car and driven 10 hours to Denver, so when I arrived, I was even more terrified. All I did was hide and hiss when people would come into my room. People thought that meant that I was mean or didn't like people, but it was only because I was terrified and unused to my environment or people. It took some very patient people at the shelter to teach me that humans can be very nice. The first person to warm up to me spent hours just sitting with me to let me see that there was no danger. I'm embarrassed to say that, at first, I hissed at her every time the door opened, but that was just because it was my natural reaction. Fortunately, she wasn't scared, and she said that when I hissed, I looked like I was smiling and just thought that was how I said hello. She and others here have taught me that people can be very nice. I am still scared when I meet new people, and I do still hiss sometimes at the sight of some person-it's just instinct, so don't be offended- but when I get to know you, I am incredibly loving and thankful for the visit. I have learned to open up and talk about my day and life. I have discovered purring too and do an awful lot of it when people pet me. I am told I am a big purr machine. I have also learned to play. On the street there was no playing, only surviving, but wow is it fun! People say that I love stuffed mice more than any other cat on the planet. It is so fun to chase them around and attack them, especially if they have a tiny bit of something called catnip. I also love wand toys, especially those with mice or fish on the ends. I can also be bribed with treats, especially those nice Churu ones. They are yummy. If you have some time, I would love to meet you. If you are patient with me, I will reward you with lots of love and affection. I am not yet a lap cat-whatever that means- and I get scared when people try to pick me up, but I do like to cuddle up next to my safe people and lounge in the sun, especially if I can see out of the window to all those pesky, delicious-looking birds. This silly woman who is sitting with me recording my words said to tell you that she cried the first time I gave her some love and attention and that you will experience the same when I choose you as my person.
