It is with great sadness that we are trying to find a new home for our pup, Bowie. Bowie is a white, 40lb pity-terrier mix. She has one brown eye and one bright blue eye. We have had her for a year and she is just under 2 years old. I love this dog with all my heart and she can be an amazing dog for the right person, but she is truly a special needs dog on multiple levels, and it has to be the right situation. We have just had to accept that we are not able to give her the home and consistent training she needs. Bowie is both Deaf and Reactive. Anyone interested in giving Bowie a home will need to be very aware of what reactivity is, the dangers it presents, and the amount of intensive training, time and consistency it requires. The reactivity means that 98% of the time she is a sweet bean, but she is incredibly sensitive to certain triggers, becomes totally overwhelmed easily, and can shift into aggression quickly in those moments. As an example, Bowie will spend months playing with our chihuahua like they are best friends. Even consciously playing to his strength, then, one day, usually thinking she’s protecting one of us, she will go after the other dog savagely. As another example, she was fine meeting one neighbor’s small daughter, but then lost it around another neighbor’s small daughter. She can be totally fine going into pet stores or public places, or she might absolutely freak out if a bicycle goes by, for instance. The turning point for us was that last week, thinking she was protecting me, she attacked my girlfriend’s arm. While there was no medical attention needed, the event was pretty traumatizing for both of us, and the situation would have been very different if I was not there to pull her off. Triggering and going after one of her parents is something that had not happened before, so it has been the primary incident that has made us accept that we cannot make it work. Reactivity is manageable with intensive and consistent training, leadership, crate training, treat training, controlled exposure to triggers, etc. But if the appropriate training is not done, the reactivity can devolve into overall aggression. For us, we now have a 1 year old niece up the street, and want to have children in the next couple years. We have had to accept that we cannot create the necessary environment, devote the necessary consistency to her training, or take the chance with small children in the house. The deafness adds another entire level of special needs and requires its own systems. She is smart and good hearted at her core, and has been responsive to learning hand signals in the limited training we have been able to give her, but again, she requires intensive time and training on both sides if she is going to overcome the reactivity. When she is not a werewolf, her favorite past times are putting her mushy little face in your hands like pudding for minutes on end, snuggling, and lots of play. We know she is adorable, but please we can only consider inquiries that have a clear understanding that this is a special needs dog on multiple levels. She should not be in an environment with small children any time soon, and she will require far more time, consistency, and training than a normal dog. If you have the ability, time, patience, confidence, leadership, and controlled environment she needs, this magical, kooky little beast will be an amazing best friend for a long time, and I do believe that she can grow beyond the reactivity. Bowie’s shots are up to date. She is spayed and chipped. Her current vet is Vetrinary Medical Center in Studio City. They are amazing.
