Handsome Bilbo is an 8-year-old purebred rat terrier, who weighs 30 lbs. Bilbo has masterfully blended two of his favorite states of being--being energetic and being a couch potato! He loves a good belly rub or butt scratch, but he won't turn down a game of tug-of-war or you throwing a toy. Just know that he probably won't bring it back, but if you want to chase him for it, game ON!! Yes, he has a sense of humor! Bilbo has a host of other great qualities and only a smattering of very manageable quirks. He is house-trained and knows lots of commands, including sit, lie down, stay, wait, and play dead. He loves to go for walks and does great on a leash. However, that leash is essential when he is outside because he doesn't always come when called (quirk 1). Bilbo is also used to staying home alone, is well-behaved, and has no separation anxiety. However, he is a resource guarder with food and will bite even the hand that feeds him if he thinks you might take his food away (quirk 2). It's best to tell him to 'wait' while you put his food down and then leave him alone while he's eating. Young children don't understand this, so Bilbo needs a home without kids. He is also just generally uncomfortable around kids and can be defensively reactive. Bilbo gets along with some, but not all, dogs. (Not really quirks, just pretty normal dog behavior) Applicants who own other dogs should be agreeable to a meet-and-greet in a neutral place to see if the dogs get along. Bilbo, the big, beautiful boy with a bundle of best behaviors and only a wee bit of baggage, is going to make someone a wonderful companion.
