This handsome Beagle mix pup was found roaming as a stray in rural VA near the Chesapeake Bay and was taken in by a good Samaritan. He was only about 4-5 months old when she found him, he wasn’t chipped, and no one was looking for him. One of our volunteers, Greg, became aware of Walnut’s plight and graciously stepped up to foster him so Worthy Dog could help him find his forever home. He’s Walnut’s hero. Walnut has been living with Greg and his pup buddy Storm for the past few weeks, learning the rules of home life. He’s crate-trained and almost potty-trained — he knows to go outside, but he’s still young, and you can’t fully trust him in the home unsupervised for long periods. Greg is working with Walnut to teach him right from wrong and will correct him so he learns. Walnut has learned to share pets and toys nicely with Storm and is always up for a game of tug of war. He’s also getting regular socialization and playdates with other dogs who visit and has had exposure to cats. Walnut is a young, active dog who needs an active family that is ready for an adolescent pup. He’s still learning and will do best with a consistent schedule and rules to follow. He needs a commitment to walks and playtime and is an active chewer who loves to play with toys. He has a big beef rib bone and an elk antler that he loves, and is also a champion squeaker and stuffing remover. He likes to watch the TV and is fascinated by birds and squirrels. He enjoys chasing balls and other toys and is good about retrieving them and bringing them back to you. His foster dad, Greg, shared this update: “Walnut is very intelligent, attentive, and super eager to please. I can not think of anything that he’s had to be told more than once, and he is very intuitive when being exposed to new things. I think he would be fine as an only dog or paired with a playful dog who matches his energy level. Like most Beagles, he likes to stay busy and explore and is a curious young pup. He is a very happy little guy and very, very snuggly. He still needs to build some confidence and will cower if he thinks you are upset with him. He is reticent at first with new people and may bark, but then he becomes playful once he’s had a few minutes to get comfortable. Overall, he is a super-love-bug and as far as I can tell, he just wants to please people and play and be happy. He is going to make some lucky family very happy.” We are looking for an active, fun home for this adorable boy. Walnut is not a city or condo dog. He needs a family who will continue to expose him to new things and help build his confidence. He’s a very affectionate, snuggly pup who loves attention and wants to be an engaged part of your life.
