Checked Out - Waitlist Only (8/22/23)Introducing Dexter!Dexter (affectionately called and responds well to the name "Wilbur" in his foster home) is a handsome 4 year old black Great Dane with a docked tail. He is a smart, social boy who loves spending his days with family and friends. He enjoys stuffies with squeakers, motivating treat toys like kongs/lick mats, and water play outside (kiddie pools, streams). He also is a great passenger in the car and enjoys going on family adventures. Wilbur does well with meeting new people and other dogs. Wilbur is located in Waseca, MN.He has no formal training but knows his basic manners like sit/down/leave it, etc. He has shown his foster mom how smart he really is each time he opens the fridge/freezer/windows/doors....he is a bit of a Houdini with these special skills (Disclaimer: Wilbur hasn't mastered shutting the door after letting himself out). Foster mom will share with interested potential adopters how she successfully manages those behaviors AND he comes with a free fridge lock; it will slow Wilbur down and save on electricity from everyone mindlessly opening the fridge door! He has nice manners at the vet, lets you trim his nails without issue He has previous experience with kids, and does well with children in general. Children with previous big dog experience are an added bonus! If there are cats in the forever home, they should be dog savvy.Dexter (Wilbur) is not a fan of being left alone for long periods of time. He is crate trained and can tolerate being crated up to 8-9 hours at a time if necessary. He has shown some separation anxiety while in the foster home. Prior to surrender and when he first arrived in foster care he was treated with prescription anti-anxiety medication, over the counter anxiety treats, and calming oils. He now only occasionally needs any of these anti-anxiety aids as he has settled in and feels comfortable and more confident. Even during high usage periods, the cost of the medication and aids to manage his anxiety did not exceed $50. When he first was settling into his foster home he was not a fan of sharing toys and food with other dogs but this has become a very rare occurrence now that everyone has adjusted and is comfortable with one another. He should be monitored with toys/treats in his new home until boundaries are set and everyone has adjusted to the new home routine. Dexter (Wilbur) requires a fenced in yard of 6 ft or taller, if the forever family lives in the city. Homes without fencing will be considered if the forever family lives in the country on a low traffic road.
