Grace - ADOPTED! Terrier (Unknown Type, Medium) Senior Female

Location:
Vienna, VA
Description:

Meet Grace! This pretty pup was rescued last Fall from an outdoor pen living with multiple other dogs after their owner died. Sadly, her owner was a backyard breeder who left behind this sweet girl unaltered, with hair matted to her skin, ear and skin infections, and advanced dental disease. Over the past 3 months, Grace had multiple masses/growths removed, her ear and skin infections have been treated, and she had a full dental clearing with multiple extractions. She is living pain-free for the first time in a very long time, and we are seeing more of her personality emerge. Grace recently had a mammary tumor removed. After a biopsy confirming it was a grade 2 carcinoma, the doctors went back in to get better margins. Her most recent histopathology report confirmed they got clear margins, and they also removed a lymph node to test and no cancer was present. Woo hoo! We were so happy to hear that Grace's surgery was successful and she is now considered cancer-free! Grace was fostered in SC for a few months while her medical issues were addressed, living with a foster mom and dad, a small Chihuahua, and a cat. We checked in with her foster mom for a post-op update: “Grace’s incision is healing nicely and she hasn’t missed a beat. She’s pretty remarkable. She definitely perked up after her dental and her personality is really starting to come out now that she feels better. She’s still a bit shy and reserved but will sit on my lap now. It took her a while to get there. She’s very happy to follow me around the house and has started to play with my dog and cat. She now asks for affection and will let you know with a little bark. She is just so cute. Grace was diagnosed with immature cataracts and had limited vision.... "I think she can see objects, but not the details. I make sure she sees me before I reach down for a pet or to pick her up. She is hesitant around steps, and we have steps to get in and out of our house, so I carry her when it’s time to go out. She knows to go potty outside and will go when I take her, but is also pee pad trained as a backup. I tried a couple of times to take her out on a leash for a short walk, but it was too stressful for her. Now that she's feeling better and has started to trust, we’ll try again. Grace is crate-trained and loves her crate…It’s her safe place.” Once Grace had recuperated, she made the trip to N. VA to find her new family. She is being fostered in a home with 3 other pups - all seniors - and quickly acclimated to her new pack. Now that she's done with all the medical, she's getting back to having fun, going on walks, and enjoying life...something she probably never knew in her prior life. UPDATE - 8/1/23 Grace has been in her local foster home for 5 months We’ve discovered her silly, playful side, and she enjoys going on short walks with her pack. While it takes her time to seek out affection, she does appreciate and value it. Her foster mom, Leah, picks her up and snuggles her every day to get her comfortable and used to more engaged affection, and she’s now very cuddly with her foster dad. Grace is now cancer-free and her major medical issues have been addressed, but she still has limited vision from cataracts. We had her eyes evaluated and her vet felt she was an ideal candidate for cataract surgery. She is not in pain and does not require drops or any meds for her eyes, but this is something that can be treated or improved with surgery. With her limited vision, she needs some time to get to know her terrain, and her foster mom always keeps a close eye on her and uses baby gates to restrict access from stairs. UPDATE - 11/15/23 - Grace had cataract surgery in both eyes and is recovering well. She's getting excellent care in her foster home, and it will take a few weeks to see the full extent of her recovery. This sweet girl has come a long way and needs an attentive, patient family to care for her. She's best suited for a calm home with easy access in and out for potty breaks and would love a dog buddy to pal around with. Cats are fine too! Apply today to learn more!
