Nina Domestic Shorthair Senior Female

Location:
Lancaster, PA
Description:

Hi! My name is Nina and I am about 10 years young! I came to the Pet Pantry some time ago and have had to spend time in the isolation area on medication. I am a sweet outgoing girl who would love nothing more than a home to call my own! Here is a medical note from the veterinarian: Nina arrived with plasma cell pododermatitis (also known as "pillow feet"), a condition which suggests her immune system is not functioning properly . She was not spayed at the time and was also dealing with an upper respiratory infection. She was mildly anemic and her red blood cells were agglutinating on a slide (sticking to each other) which is another indicator of immune system dysfunction. She has been tested for retroviruses (feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency viruses) twice and found free of these viruses. Spaying her did not change her condition. Her feet and respiratory disease were initially treated with doxycycline and she responded, but her anemia worsened. Prednisilone was added via a transdermal preparation(as the oral form is very bitter tasting) and her anemia has improved and stabilized, but it is not yet normal. She seems very comfortable, but it does not appear that she will be cured of her condition; just managed with medication. At this time, we believe that Nina will do best if she can be moved to a home. She is a very sweet gal, and enjoys human interaction, but she'd rather not be picked up. She has demonstrated by hissing and growling that she does not like being around other cats. Therefore a single cat household would be best for her. We do not know what she thinks of dogs, but it should be considered that a dog in the household could be a stressor for her, which will not aid her condition. We believe a quiet household with a set routine would be best for Nina. Nina will require daily medication and regular exams and blood testing by your veterinarian. If she needs to stay on prednisilone long term to control her anemia, she will be at higher risk of developing diabetes. She is pretty good about taking her medication; she doesn't like it but is manageable. She does not get excited about food in either the dry or canned form at serving time, but she does eat well. Nina has a yellow fuzzy chirping ball that she loves to play with. She will also carry on a conversation with you and, to be truthful, she does have quite a lot to say. She enjoys petting and stroking. She may be a bit "broken", but she deserves to live out her life in her forever home. I am spayed, microchipped, and up to date on my vaccines. I am available for adoption at the Pet Pantry’s main facility, 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster. If you think I may be the purrfect match for your family please fill out an adoption application! Applications are available at our location as well as online at petpantrylc.org. From there, our adoption coordinator will be in touch!
