Penny is a special small beagle with an adorable face and distinctive persona. She enjoys wandering and romping in the fenced yard, with much sniffing. She’s eager for walks and comfortable as we pass by other dogs and their families. She gets a bit excited when a squirrel scoots by and will try to follow it up the tree.At home, she is typically quiet and close by. She likes pets and belly rubs but so far has not snuggled in our laps. She is very gentle when taking treats – and likes to reach for them, or just nibble them from the floor. She eats well and potties on and off-leash. She is fine on car rides.She largely ignores our very bouncy 3-year-old beagle, Pogo, and prefers to just relax on the couch. She is comfortable with our grandchildren, ages 6 and 3. She is not a playful pup and probably not well-suited to a family looking for a pet for their children.Penny likes to have her people at home. When left alone, she squeaks for a bit – and watches for your return. She is not crated during the day and has the run of the house. She sleeps in her crate at night. We are retired and most times one of us is home, but she has done fine when we are both gone.As with some rescues, Penny seems to have had a hard time for her first 5 years. She was a breeder and likely had very little human contact. She arrived skittish and submissive, often cowering away from us. She warmed up day by day, at her own pace, as she became comfortable with us and this home. Her confidence and trust have grown a lot, in just a couple of weeks. As her special personality emerges, it is obvious to us that she has much joy and love to share. We think Penny will do best with a patient family that is experienced with rescue dogs. Other positives are a fenced yard, daily walks, and an older calmer dog already in home – or no dog.
