** $900.01 in pledges for the rescue that pulls ** Alex ACCT-A-142647 is a senior chow, shar pei mix who found herself at ACCT after being found as a stray. Since coming to ACCT Alex has been understandably nervous and fairly shutdown. Upon medical examination, unfortunately it seems that Alex has had a tough life! Alex appears to be over the age of 7 or 8 at least, likely older. Her mouth is painful as she has advanced dental disease. She also has chronic skin issues present and is very pruritic. Bilateral and long-standing entropion have left eyes permanently affected, although still has some vision. She is also believed to be deaf, but given depressed state, it is hard to tell. Alex is an easy going gal who needs a patient and loving owner to manager her medical concerns as well as giving her time to open up. Alex has spent time with several staff members and have stolen their hearts due to her gentle soul. Alex is happy walking around sniffing the grass. She is quite the stubborn lady when she wants to be as well and likes to go at her own pace in the direction she chooses. Per staff 7/17: Alex was sleeping on her bed when I approached her kennel. I believe she may be hard of hearing as she did not hear me calling for her or opening the door. I touched her lightly which made her jump. She avoided the leash and would step backwards every time I tried to leash her. I crouched down and put my hand and she slowly approached me. She exited the kennel with no issue. She takes her time walking on the leash and will freeze any time there is leash pressure. So I let her guide me and do her own thing! We took a very nice slow walk around the building and chilled in the behavior office. She explored around and came up to me a few times unprompted, soliciting attention. She allowed me to pet her head and back, but would flag her tail after a few seconds. When returning to the kennel, she pancaked but tolerated me picking her up to go back in. Per staff 7/17: Pt was well behaved for exam, she's depressed overall. Muzzled as a precaution to examine ears and eyes but Pt is non-aggressive; allowed all treatments, including blood draw, cleaning of eyes/ears and med administration. Mouth is painful but just shied away from having it examined. She enjoyed pets and head scratches. She perked up when she smelled an area where a cat had been and again when offered cheese! I believe she could be in a home with older children that understand she needs her space.
