* Reach this dog's foster contact at XXXX@gmail.com or text / leave a message at 573-512-XXXX .*Chico is a boxer & australian shepherd or cattle dog mix, 55 lbs, loves to be a lap dog, spoken to, played with, and most of all loves playing with other dogs. Cats are unknown as he's never been around one. He takes a bit to build trust and has a hard time with inconsistent schedules. He is crate and potty trained and very familiar with commands. Chico is a very smart, loving dog who loves to be loyal to the people he trusts and is looking for an adult-only home. He's good with children that he is familiar with, but now that his kids are growing up and having friends over, Chico seems to be having a harder time feeling comfortable around the kids' friends. He shows fear of them by his barking, which intimidates people and kids. He went to a trainer for 6 weeks that had helped the family guide him with his sensitivity towards unfamiliar people. They have been doing what they learned from training, such as putting him on a leash on his outdoor bed until he feels comfortable and then release him. Once he starts acting protective, they would have him in stay position, which he responds well with and walk over to him to assure him he’s safe. Other times when the kids have lots of friends over, his mom would have him leashed to her training belt till he’s completely calmed and each kid has said hello by either petting him with and without a treat, then release him. He seemed responsive until recently when, for the first time, he nipped a 16 year old nephew onvthe ankle. The mom was not there to witness it, so the timing to mark that behavior was missed. His family is sick about the thought of giving him up.
