Meet Ella. This pretty Collie mix was originally picked up as a stray, found roaming in rural SC. She ended up in a shelter and was very thin and terrified. She went into decline at the shelter, so the staff reached out to our team with a plea for help. We took Ella in and quickly learned she was anxious about change and is a pup who will need time to trust and settle in….but she can acclimate and be a happy dog. Ella was fostered in the Carolinas for a few months while she rehabilitated and was introduced to home life. She had a wonderful foster family who helped her integrate and connect as part of a family. We had a chance to get to know her better in her foster home and her needs. We learned that she is a sweet pup who is unsure. She needs someone to guide her, and time to open up to new people. She came to N. VA late 2022 and we thought we had a committed adopter for her, but Ella is back in our care now, and we are looking for her true forever home. Ella has been blessed to get two excellent foster homes. She is currently being fostered in a quiet area of Catharpin and doing well. She’s living a single woman, Tonia, and has made a real connection. She watches her for guidance, seeks out pets, and gives consistent tail wags. We are so happy to see her progress. She is not a difficult dog, but she will need a patient owner who is willing to work to gain her trust; someone who will engage her and help her work through her insecurities. We brought in a professional trainer to assess Ella after she lost her home. She was depressed and had gained weight in her adoptive home, so we spent the past few months getting her back on track with daily walks and giving her the stable, consistent routine she needs. After two months of rehab that included daily exercse and a consistent routine, Tonia shared this update: "Ella is doing amazing and is a totally different dog! She's gone from laying by the door, staring away from me, to looking to me for "what are we doing now?" She's outside right now, in the grass, chewing on her turkey tendons I got from Chewy. She loves them. She's doing better engaging with company now. She's fine as long as everyone is sitting down. But when they stand, she may bark at men. Women are better than men in her eyes, but she's not aggressive towards anyone. She even likes some people now too. " Inside the home, Ella’s house manners are excellent - she’s housetrained and crate trained and does fine being left home alone. We’ve learned that she LOVES walking on the trails with her foster mom and will run and explore the creek beds where she really comes alive. She also likes hanging out in the backyard grass chewing on her favorite treat keeping an eye on oll the critters. Ella is a country girl at heart and is not meant for city living, so we are looking for an adopter in the quiet suburbs or more rural parts of our region. While Ella is not one to seek out conflict, she is fearful of other dogs and is best as an only dog. She did coexist peacefully in her prior foster home with cats. Her family did a very gradual introduction, and she learned to respect the kitties’ space…so cats with a savvy owner are possible. We are looking for that special someone for Ella who can give her a calm, stable home environment and is willing to invest in helping her grow. She is a low to moderate-energy pup, and would love a large yard to explore but does not need a lot of exercise. She will make an excellent hiking buddy and really enjoys exploring the outdoors.
