Pickles came to us by way of the Fort Worth Animal Shelter. We came across her post by the good folks who work at the shelter and we couldn't say no - despite her condition, she just looked so happy-go-lucky. We could tell she needed some work though because she was underweight, her legs were in bad shape, and we needed to see what (if anything) could be done to help her walk/get some pain relief/etc. A willing volunteer was able to pick her up and get her to us. She spent the first couple of weeks getting used to the new space and constant bandage changes to get the sores off her legs. We were able to secure a surgical consultation just to see what, if anything, could be done about her walking. Unfortunately, the only procedure that could be done would have been very risky and would have only slightly reduced any pain she was experiencing. We opted not to go for the surgery and voted, instead, to treat her as best we could. With our experience with paralyzed dogs in tote, we got to work. We switched her to a raw diet, which greatly improved her bowel movements. We got her a drag-bag and wheelchair, to get her as mobile as possible (she took to it like a fish to water!). We also started her on a range of supplements/herbal treatments plus laser therapy to make sure her other muscles were up to par. After a while, we were able to get her spayed and ready for a home who can provide her the care she needs. Pickles gets along great with other dogs. She loves to run (roll) with them for hours on-end and has never shown any signs of aggression towards them. She does not seem to have any issues with cats - she tends to ignore the outdoor cats we have here at the sanctuary. She is very well-behaved in the bath and has gotten along very well with our children. She does bark when strangers come over, but we think that is because she is unable to get up and see them. When they do come over to her, she is very friendly and excited to say hello. At this point, Pickles is like any other dog, except that she does need to use the bathroom a bit more frequently than others. While she is indoors, we do have her on a waterproof pad in a pen that she can scoot around in. When she does need to go outside, she is pretty good at letting someone know - she starts to scurry around a bit and that is her sign to go outside. She has no issues with the wheelchair or the drag bag, but she tends to like the wheelchair a bit more (for obvious reasons). Pickles is fully vetted - spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. She does not have any other health issues. If you have experience with paralyzed dogs, she would be a great fit for your home!
