Adopt Eugene a Brown/Chocolate Mixed Breed (Large) dog in Philadelphia

Location:
Philadelphia, PA
Description:

Our sweet Eugene has been in foster care since August 15th - you can read about him below: Eugene is a laid-back dog for the most part although there are times he gets excited and pulls on the leash (strong for supposedly being a senior dog) or jumps up/on when meeting new people. He gets a little startled when there is a sudden noise or when he sees something new. I do work during the day so he is crate bound, but he is housebroken and does bark if he needs to go outside. When let out of his crate for walks, the first thing he does is roll around to scratch his back on a floor cushion (and for tummy rubs) and he does enjoy rolling around on his back outside on the grass or patio as well. Eugene is estimated to be about 7 years old (just a little gray on his muzzle) but he does not act it and gets around well---just in case, though, I have started him on joint chews to keep him that way---and he was recently neutered so he no longer stops at every bush, lol. Eugene does have a stubborn streak when he does not want to do something and simply refuses to budge when I'd like him to go. For example, when I walk him first thing in the morning to relieve himself, he'd rather head back into the house for his breakfast---it's funny but frustrating, too, since he'll be housebound most of the day (although a family member usually stops by midday for a bathroom break/walk in the park). And he did somehow get out of his halter when in the backyard on one occasion but, luckily, headed back into the house (where he knows he gets fed). The only command he definitely knows is "sit" which he does even when I don't tell him to and "kisses". I have not yet introduced him to my kitties and only a few sniffs with my other foster dog so will update later as to how he adjusts to the menagerie. Per volunteer 2/25: He was fantastic at the adoption event today. He's not reactive towards dogs if they growl or show their teeth at him. He's a rock star. Per foster 1/25: Loves eating snow but hates going outside in the rain---takes one look and heads inside again, lol. Eugene walks at a good clip (so I get my cardio) and would probably love a fenced-in yard where he could run fast, or be a good jogging buddy. Full disclosure: he was adopted in the fall by a loving, young couple who took him for lots of walks and spoiled him but, for some reason, he developed a severe case of separation anxiety---the constant barking (day & night) was too much for an apartment situation and he was returned. Since then Eugene seems to have calmed down for the most part---while I do hear him barking sometimes when I am outside, the barking is not very noticeable, as I live in a single home. However, he does constantly bark while I take my other foster, Biggie, out for a walk---guess he misses his buddy.
