Simba came to us as a local owner surrender, but like many pigs, he was bounced around a bit before he arrived. When he was a piglet, he was purchased by a family and lived in their house, but when he grew to be bigger than they expected, they found a greenhouse that was interested in having a pig to be an exciting attraction for their visitors. Unfortunately, this seemed too good to be true, and what they thought would be an amazing home for him was anything but. We were told that he was kept in a tiny enclosure without any access to the outside world and he stayed there until they posted him as free to good home on Facebook. This could have been very dangerous for him, and could have even led to him being abused or slaughtered, but a kind family saw him and were able to take him in. They had him for a little while before they realized that he deserved a better life than they could provide and they also sought to rehome him. Luckily, we saw the post this time and reached out to help. The family was thrilled to surrender him so he could be safe and have the chance to find the family he deserves. Simba is definitely one of our more difficult pigs. Because he had such limited interactions with humans for a big part of his life, he can be territorial and needs a confident and experienced family to guide him to be a better behaved piggie. Once he knows and trusts you, he can be an absolute mush and positively loves belly rubs! When we’re cleaning his stall, he will walk over and demand them by just flopping over in front of you and not moving until he’s satisfied he’s gotten enough attention. However, if you are timid or nervous around him, he will definitely be able to tell and will try to intimidate and has been known to nip. While Simba is living happily in our pig herd right now, we actually think he would be happiest as an only pig (preferably with goat companions, who he would much rather be friends with). He could definitely live with other pigs, but he would rather not have to compete for human attention and the best sleeping spots!
